Sustainability Energy Efficiency
The Science Park's policy is to make use of cutting edge building management systems. Energy conservation is the major consideration when a decision is taken on the orientation of buildings while at the same time retaining the exciting views of city, sea and hills characteristic of the site.
Ground-water augmented heating and cooling is available to Belfast, through the Lagan aquifer; thus NISP was advised by the Carbon Trust, one of its tenants. The unknowns were depth, porosity and temperature. NISP took the risk and discovered that all were acceptable; so White Star House is the first to use ground water chilling of its air-conditioners to cool its considerable bank of computers. Pre-heating was deemed unnecessary for this tenant. A saving of 20% on electricity (or about 20 tons of Carbon Dioxide emission annually) is expected. Actual BREAM measurements will be implemented in due course by the Carbon Trust.
NISP is a model of telecommunication connectivity with an all-digital, open-access, carrier-neutral environment supporting an HP-Cisco platform which integrates voice and data. This minimizes a company's need for physical travel and for extra space.
