“The Royal Society Enterprise Fund” INVITATION ONLY
Date -
10 September 2008
You are invited to attend a special NISP CONNECT workshop to be held at Northern Ireland Science Park, with a presentation on:
“The Royal Society Enterprise Fund”
By Dr Andrew Mackintosh
Presentation Overview:
As it approaches its 350th anniversary in 2010, The Royal Society (the UK Academy of Sciences) has embarked on a major £100m fund-raising campaign to support its future investments in science. Within this campaign, £20m is being raised from donations to launch an exciting new initiative – the Royal Society Enterprise Fund. This is believed to be a unique example of ‘venture philanthropy’ practised on a national scale.
The Enterprise Fund will invest in early-stage businesses emerging from the UK science base, an area where companies have traditionally found it hard to raise money. Profits generated will be recycled by the Society, creating an ‘evergreen’ fund for the long-term support of growing high-technology businesses.
The presentation will outline the Royal Society thinking behind the creation of the fund, the method of approach to potential donors and the proposed operation of the fund, which is now starting to review its first investment opportunities.

Dr Andrew Mackintosh has been appointed Chief Executive of the Royal Society Enterprise Fund. Dr Mackintosh has extensive experience of leading both publicly and privately owned technology companies and was formerly Chief Executive of Oxford Instruments plc.
